RIZE Massachusetts Foundation
Peer Support Community Partners is working to develop a support program for Massachusetts harm reduction workers utilizing peer support and the RIVER communication model. This project is funded by a contract from RIZE Massachusetts Foundation, a public-private partnership solely dedicated to funding solutions to end the overdose crisis. This project will involve developing a broad community advisory board of harm reduction workers to guide the development and to stay true to the ideal "Nothing about us without us!"
The first phase of the project occurred over the course of six months and involved the assembling of a Community Advisory Board (CAB) of folks from different backgrounds. We also involved applicants who were not selected for the CAB in conducting one-on-one interviews and focus groups. This helped us gather as much guidance and information as possible for this project and also inform us about other needs in the community. In the initial phase, CAB members received training on RIVER. Guidance was provided on how peer support can be implemented and can enhance a supportive workplace culture.
The second phase is now underway, which includes the initiation of a pilot training of RIVER along with an implementation program collaboratively developed with the CAB. We will continuously refine and monitor this program over the span of one year. Additionally, the project aims to capture and document valuable insights from workers, which will not only guide and inform similar worker support initiatives but also presents a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights from the workforce.
